Looking for something new?
We’re like a family! At Firehouse, we truly care about each other personally and professionally. We are eager to help each other behind the scenes every day to create a collaborative, communicative environment. We have fun together each day and are keen on fostering relationships with twice-annual company events (one in the summer and one in December) as well as ongoing philanthropic activities. We strive for work-life balance to keep morale high. We are intensely focused on communication, with clients and with each other. Even our architectural design facilitates good communication: the layout of our facilities includes open, shared space, with most team members working within a few feet of each other. We embrace an open-door policy and employ a hospital manager and medical director at each location to lead the team and foster good relationships. We onboard new team members with the Firehouse culture during training so they know our style, our expectations, and how they’ll receive feedback each quarter. We support our team in continuing their veterinary education: our doctors attend continuing education conferences and our hospital managers attend annual leadership and communication seminars. For our Vet Techs and Customer Service Representatives (front desk team), we sponsor training that syncs with their personal needs and goals. Finally, we’re focused on developing leaders within our organization. We want every team member to feel like they’re part of a bigger mission, to feel empowered to carry out important tasks, to develop their own skills, and to achieve their own goals.

We are Goodheart Animal Health Center, a full-service small animal general practice offering high-quality medicine and exceptional client service. We LOVE to talk about what sets us apart but hate to waste paper, so explore our site to learn more about us. Be sure to check out our “100 Little Things”!
You are a veterinary student who wants to gain experience in a high-quality small animal practice, has a positive outlook and loves connecting with clients (even if it still makes you nervous), and is ready to jump in and grab opportunities to learn as they come your way. Our externship program is open to vet students at any stage of their education
The What
Our Veterinary Externship Program relies on student-driven learning to improve your clinical skills and, for those who are interested, your business acumen as well. In addition to shadowing our doctors during appointments and assisting with surgeries, we may ask you to research a medical topic and present to our team or join us at a community event to connect with new clients.
We want to help prepare you to be a happy, productive practitioner of veterinary medicine and an important member of your community. If you would like to preview our Clinical Externship and Business/Clinical Externship Passports that we use as our starting point for each student’s learning plan, please contact Dr Beth Spencer at the email below.
The Where, When, and How
Denver, Colorado!
We host externs year-round for 2-4 weeks per student. Please contact us at least 60 days prior to your externship start date, and the sooner the better.
